This is a phrase that everyone has heard and it's true. But, did you know that your skin is the body's largest organ? It comprises 15-20% of your total weight. As the largest organ that everyone can see, it's important that it is cared for properly.
It’s essential to develop a skincare routine that is simple and realistic. Beautiful skin is healthy skin. Here’s a routine you can set your clock by:
- Cleanse
- Tone
- Moisturize
- Protect
As we age, our skin’s cells turnover less rapidly than they did when we were younger. With this slower cell replacement, our skin may begin to appear dull and its texture may appear to be different. The collagen and elastin fibers that provide the supporting structure of the skin start to weaken and unravel so that the skin’s elasticity diminishes. All of these changes are compounded by gravity which may result in fine lines, wrinkles, droopy eyelids and jowls.
Although sun causes most skin damage attributed to premature aging, even people who avoid the sun will notice changes occurring. The good news is… with good skincare and the availability of high quality skincare products, you can keep your skin looking vital.
Here are some important tips to remember. To look good on the outside, you have to take care of yourself on the inside. Remember the following:
- Drink plenty of water
- Take care of your face and neck… but, don’t forget the rest of your body! Use moisturizing body wash and lotions to help keep your skin glowing.
- Get plenty of rest
- Protect with sunscreen before going out in the sun to help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays
Today’s skincare products and cosmetics can be found for normal, dry, oily, or sensitive skin; but, that’s not all! Choose from anti-aging products that minimize fine lines and wrinkles, anti-acne to help minimize pores and hypoallergenic for sensitive skin.
Take a Minute - Test Your Beauty IQ
Q. Will a toner dry my skin?
A. No. Alcohol-free toners are very gentle and are an important part of your daily skincare routine. They will minimize the appearance of pores, restore the natural pH balance of your skin and remove any traces of makeup and dirt. Do not confuse toners with astringents, which contain alcohol and are meant to be drying for very oily skin.
Q. Does the sun pay a big role in the health of my skin?
A. You bet it does! Approximately 90% of your skin’s aging is due to sun exposure. Always remember to wear a sunscreen under your makeup. Some moisturizers even contain a sun protection factor (SPF). If you want that ‘golden look’, try sunless tanners or bronzers.
Q. Is there a difference between eye creams and other moisturizers?
A. Yes, eye creams are formulated specifically for your eye’s delicate skin area, which has no oil beds and requires special care.
Q. Do I really need to use an eye makeup remover to remove my shadow, liner and mascara?
A. Yes. The skin around your eye is very delicate. You do not want to use anything oily or harsh. Apply your remover to a cotton round/pad and hold on your eyelids for several seconds. Then wipe gently downward. Now you are ready to cleanse your face.
Q. I’m too busy to apply lots of makeup. What can I do to look beautiful?
A. The ‘beauty basics’ are the things that we all can do. Eat healthy. Drink lots of water. Get 8 hours of sleep a night. Try to minimize stress. If you add a few simple practices, such as daily cleansing, toning, moisturizing and sun protection for your skin ... you will look truly beautiful!
